Cranberry Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies

It’s holiday cookie time! I love baking cookies all year round, but baking cookies in December is particularly special. And yet holiday cookies for many of us can trigger that spiral into very unhealthy patterns that last well into the New Year and beyond.

So now it’s time to share these A M A Z I N G cookies with you! Made with whole rolled oats, date-sweetened chocolate chips, and fresh cranberries (NOT dried cranberries that have added oil and sugar!), these yummy cookies are chewy, rich and chocolaty, and both a little sweet and a little tart, and oh so good with an afternoon cup of hot coffee or tea.

They might just be the perfect antidote to the holiday downward spiral! WFPB and SOS-free (whole food, plant-based and free of salt, oil and sugar). And gluten-free, flour-free, and of course dairy-free.

CRANBERRY CHOCOLATE CHIP OATMEAL COOKIES

  • Servings: about 12 to 14 cookies (3-inches each)

2 ripe bananas
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 cup rolled oats
1 tablespoon ground flax seeds
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup fresh (raw) cranberries
1/4 cup pitted dates, chopped
1/4 cup date-sweetened chocolate chips*

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a large bowl, mash bananas. Add applesauce and vanilla. To the banana mixture, add the oats, ground flax, cinnamon, and baking powder. Combine well. Add cranberries, dates, and chocolate chips and combine evenly.

On a baking sheet lined with a non-stick silicone baking mat (or parchment paper), drop scoops of cookie batter (around 3 rounded tablespoons per cookie). Flatten carefully.

Bake for 17 to 20 minutes, or until golden and firm. Allow to cool briefly before serving.

* I find date-sweetened chocolate chips at Whole Foods, and also online through Amazon.

    I wish recipes calling for bananas would give a measurement of how much mashed banana is used. Bananas come in varying sizes, so using too much could make them more gooey.

    The cookies are good. I will make them again, but I think the texture might be better adding a little oat flour and possibly reducing the banana a bit and increasing the applesauce. They seemed a little too gooey. Definitely a fan of the fresh cranberries and chocolate chips (I used sugar free). I am also tempted to add a few chopped walnuts or pecans.

    • Thanks for your comments. So happy to hear these cookies inspired you! Adding walnuts or pecans sounds like a great idea. Let me know if you try adding oat flour, more applesauce, and less banana. I would expect those changes to result in a cookie that’s not as moist, chewy, or sweet, which you may prefer. If your cookies were gooey, I think they probably needed to just bake longer. : )

    i love the idea of a healthy cookie but isn’t a bit misleading to say they are sugar free when they have dates. I realize they are whole version and with fiber but they still have a lot of sugar. Also, is here a substitute for the bananas? i don’t use them due to the negative impact on the environment and people – even the organic ones. thanks.

    • If you avoid bananas, maybe substitute applesauce…but honestly it’s the bananas and dates (whole, natural foods) that make this a holiday cookie. And yes fruits are sweet – but not the same as refined sugar. : )
